Louisa Bennion & Loic Blejean, a transatlantic duet...
Originally from rural Utah, Louisa Bennion fell in with the wrong crowd and began playing Irish traditional music during her university years in Ithaca, New York. She studied concertina with Noel Hill, Micheál O Raghallaigh, Tim Collins and Michael Rooney, and during 6 years spent living in New York City she learned as much as possible from the wealth of Irish musicians who live in and pass through that great crossroads. She was particularly influenced by Patrick Ourceau and the other regular musicians at the Mona's session, who were in turn drawing on the strong presence in New York of an older generation of musician immigrants from Clare and East Galway. Louisa currently lives in the Alps of Haute Provence, where she is a member of the traditional Irish trio Bonaparte's Retreat.Loic Blejean is a French piper from Brittany. He started with the uilleann pipes in 1989, and often traveled to Ireland for sessions and festivals, where he met and was influenced by many great musicians, in particular the piper Brendan Ring. In 1996, he joined fiddler Paul Flynn and singer/guitar player David Muldrew for the first of several residencies at McGurk's, the famous Irish venue in St. Louis, Missouri. Then he toured Europe with the trad/pop band Glaz, and the Quebec trad group Gwazigan. Since 2002 he has been part of Herve Lesvenan's Ars'Ys project, and is a current member of Breton super-group Carre Manchot. He also plays with his brother, box player Ronan; whether as a duet, or in trio with guitar player Hervé Cureau, or with the band Mercedes O’Keeffe. Together the brothers Bléjean created the Irish Rendez Vous festival in Tréméven in 2009.
